Electric Arc Furnace: Classification, Composition, and Applications

An electric arc furnace (EAF) is a specialized electric furnace designed to smelt metals and ores at exceptionally high temperatures generated by electrode arcs. When a gas discharge forms an arc, the energy becomes highly concentrated, with the arc zone temperature exceeding 3000℃. Compared to other steelmaking furnaces, EAFs offer greater flexibility in metal smelting, effectively eliminating impurities such as sulfur and phosphorus. Additionally, their furnace temperature is easily controllable, and they occupy a relatively small footprint, making them ideal for smelting high-quality alloy steel.

Classification of Electric Arc Furnaces

Based on their heating methods, electric arc furnaces can be categorized into three main types:

  1. Indirect Heating Electric Arc Furnace: This type generates an electric arc between two electrodes without the arc touching the material. Instead, the material is heated through thermal radiation. However, this furnace type is known for its noisy operation and low efficiency, leading to its gradual phase-out.

  2. Direct Heating Electric Arc Furnace: In this configuration, the electric arc is generated between the electrode and the material, directly heating the latter. Three-phase electric arc furnaces used in steelmaking are a common example of direct heating electric arc furnaces.

  3. Submerged Arc Furnace: Also known as a reduction electric furnace or submerged electric furnace, this type buries one end of the electrode within the material layer. An arc forms within the material layer, and the material is heated by the resistance of the layer itself. Submerged arc furnaces are commonly employed for smelting ferroalloys, matte, and producing calcium carbide.

Composition of Electric Arc Furnaces

An electric arc furnace consists of several key components:

  1. Power Supply Section: This includes the electric furnace transformer (rectifier), high-voltage power supply, and low-voltage electrical control cabinet, among others.

  2. Electrode Section: Comprising the electrode lifting device, conductive cross arm, and electrode itself, this section plays a crucial role in arc generation and control.

  3. Furnace Body Section: This includes the furnace shell, furnace cover, and furnace body tilting mechanism, which together form the main structure of the furnace.

  4. Short Net Section: Consisting of conductive copper bars and water-cooled cables, this section ensures efficient electrical conductivity and cooling.

  5. Cooling Water System: Essential for maintaining optimal operating temperatures and preventing equipment damage.

Working Principle of Electric Arc Furnaces

Electric arc furnace smelting utilizes the heat generated by the arc formed between the graphite electrode and the iron material (liquid iron) to melt the iron and overheat the liquid iron. During the smelting process, once the iron material is melted, further temperature increases and chemical composition adjustments are carried out under the coverage of molten slag. Electric arc furnaces are classified as either acidic or alkaline based on the properties of the slag and refractory lining. Alkaline electric arc furnaces possess the capability to desulfurize and dephosphorize the molten metal.

Applications of Electric Arc Furnaces

Electric arc furnaces find widespread use in various industries, including:

  1. Steel Smelting and Ferroalloy Refining: EAFs are extensively used for smelting steel and refining ferroalloys, ensuring high-quality metal production.

  2. High-Titanium Slag and Electric Welding Slag Flux Smelting: These furnaces are employed in smelting high-titanium slag and electric welding slag flux, contributing to various industrial processes.

  3. Smelting of High-Temperature Refractory Materials: EAFs are utilized for smelting high-temperature refractory materials such as alumina, magnesia, and alumina-calcium cement, essential for various high-temperature applications.

  4. Smelting of Stainless Steel Grinding Wheel Ash and Oxide Scale: These furnaces also play a role in smelting stainless steel grinding wheel ash and oxide scale, facilitating recycling and resource utilization.
