Electric Arc Furnace Steelmaking: Requirements for Raw Material Scrap Steel

It is common knowledge that scrap steel serves as the primary raw material in electric arc furnace steelmaking. However, are you aware of the specific requirements that electric arc furnace steelmaking places on scrap steel? By reading the following brief introduction to electric arc furnaces, you can gain an understanding of the basic requirements for scrap steel as a raw material in the steelmaking process.

Requirements for Electric Arc Furnace Steelmaking

The main material utilized in electric furnace steelmaking is scrap steel. The quality of scrap steel has a direct bearing on the quality, cost, and productivity of the steelmaking operation. Consequently, there are several fundamental requirements for scrap steel, as outlined below:

1. Clean and Less Rusty Surface

The surface of scrap steel should be clean and exhibit minimal rust. Debris such as sand adhering to the scrap steel can diminish the furnace's electrical conductivity, prolong the melting time, interfere with the dephosphorization effect of the oxidizing agent, and corrode the furnace lining. If the scrap steel is heavily rusted or contaminated with oil, it will lead to a reduction in the yield of steel and alloying elements, as well as an increase in the hydrogen content of the steel.

2. Absence of Non-Ferrous Metals

Scrap steel must not contain non-ferrous metals such as lead, tin, arsenic, zinc, and copper. Lead, with its high density and low melting point, is insoluble in molten steel and tends to accumulate in the gaps at the bottom of the furnace, potentially causing water leakage. Moreover, tin, arsenic, and copper can easily induce brittleness in the steel.

3. No Mixed Hazardous Materials

To ensure safe production, scrap steel must not be mixed with airtight containers, flammable and explosive substances, or toxic materials.

4. Clear Chemical Composition and Low Yellow Phosphorus Content

The chemical composition of the scrap steel must be clearly defined, and the content of yellow phosphorus should not be excessively high.

5. Appropriate Scrap Shape and Size

The shape of the scrap steel should not be overly large. Additionally, pig iron is commonly used to increase the charge quantity in electric furnace steelmaking, but the amount of pig iron used typically does not exceed 30% of the total charge.

By adhering to these requirements, electric arc furnace steelmaking operations can optimize their processes, ensuring high-quality steel production while maintaining cost-effectiveness and operational safety.
